Holiday Pick and Pack – Volunteers Needed
Volunteers Needed
Join in and be a part of labor’s largest charitable event as we serve union families going through hardship with toys, handcrafted stockings from the union retirees, food boxes, gifts for children to give to their parents or caregivers, and more items to help support families through the holidays.
We all know that the past few years have been incredibly hard on working families. Be a part of bringing holiday joy to those impacted by financial hardship, loss, illness, and other destabilizing events.
What volunteer shifts are needed?
There are many different and exciting opportunities this year. All volunteer opportunities are broken out by date on our volunteer sign-up platform, so keep a close eye on the dates for different volunteer opportunities and look at the calendar to help figure out how to sign up! And, if you want to sign up for Pick & Pack, all the jobs are broken into two-hour slots between 10am and 4pm on Saturday, December 9th, keep an eye on what time you are signing up for because it’s a long list!
PRE-EVENT:
- Registration Calls (11/27-12/8): For a few hours a day, every weekday in the two weeks leading up to pick & pack, we will have our registration callers following up with families to make sure they know how to get registered for PFP, have the registration link, and know when to complete it by. This is a critically important role to make sure that all the families referred by their unions are ready to go for the event.
- Reminder Calls (12/12 & 12/13): Help us call all our participating families to remind them to be home the morning of December 16th to greet their delivery drivers and receive the gifts!
- Volunteer Pre-Event Drivers & Toy Transporters (12/1, 12/4 & 12/6): Volunteer drivers will help pick up and transport toys from our office and union halls to the LIUNA 737 Training Center at 17230 NE Sacramento St, Portland, OR 97230. They may also help pick up other needed items such as printing for parent packets.
- Bag Haulers & Organizers (12/15): Help us get everything staged and ready for the big event! This role involves transporting bags from upstairs to the staging area and getting everything organized and staged before delivery day.
PICK & PACK:
We will be having a huge Pick & Pack Party all day on Saturday, December 9th (10am-6pm)! We will be picking the amazing toys and getting them ready to be delivered, so we will need a lot of help from all our volunteer elves to make this event possible. This year, we will have a number of different types of volunteer roles to help streamline the Pick & Pack process and play to all our strengths. Please read below to learn more about the different volunteer roles:
- Volunteer Check-In Elves (12/9): Help us get all the Pick & Packers and other volunteers checked in and ready to go! This is a shorter shift, but you are welcome to stick around longer to help where it’s needed.
- Toy Pickers (12/9 & 12/11): Help us select just the right toys for each child! This role is critical to the success of the day of giving – you will be responsible for picking out toys for families based on the guidance given to us by the participating families.
- Stocking Stuffer Elves (12/9): Help us get all the hand-sewn stockings stuffed and ready to go! You will be responsible for getting the stockings prepped with goodies and ready to go into each child’s bag.
- Toy Checkers (12/9): Do you really know what kids like and find FUN? Be the second set of eyes on selected toys to make sure every family is getting amazing and age-appropriate gifts.
- Bow Tying Team (12/9): Do you have attention to detail and good bow-tying skills? Help get the kids’ and families’ bags zip-tied and bow-tied.
- Bag Organizers (12/9): After the bags are bow-tied and ready to go, help us sort them by driver to get ready for the big day!
DELIVERY DAY:
Delivery Drivers (12/16): Fire up your sleigh! Volunteers will be asked to deliver pre-bagged gifts and a non-perishable food box to two or three households within or very near the same zip code in the greater Portland area. An option will be given to super volunteers who don’t mind driving a little bit outside of the region to our more rural families.
